CURE TENNIS ELBOW While not an actual cure for tennis elbow, hitting the ball in the center with good timing goes a long way in reducing the effects. Consider the fact the average tennis racket weighs between 10 and 13 ounces. Unless other factors come into play, this weight by itself is not enough to give a player tennis elbow. What then are the causes of tennis elbow? To put it bluntly, poor tennis instruction! Tennis instruction that emphasizes some of the typical concepts found on the TENNIS FALLACIES page greatly increases the probability of getting tennis elbow. Specifically, the two main culprits are: WATCH THE BALL and KEEP YOUR WRIST FIRM. The CONTACT POINT CONCEPT addresses the issue of how a player can hit dead center every time. This will eliminate the vibration of off center shots which directly contributes to tennis elbow. I don't claim that the Contact Point Concept will cure tennis elbow, but I have had students who experienced complete reversals and no longer use braces and other contraptions in order to play tennis. KEEP YOUR WRIST FIRM is one of the worst directions a tennis instructor can give a student. It results in a rigid stroke where players dramatically increase the chance of injury to their wrists, elbows, and shoulders. I will always suggest to my students that they stay relaxed throughout the entire swing, especially their wrists! By relieving tension and promoting mechanically sound principles in a swing, I can help players enjoy tennis more, hit with less effort, and minimize injury.
